About Panama

Panama is one of the preferred places for foreigners to live in Latin America.
Even for its citizens, Panama is one of the 3 best countries in Latin America for its quality of life, health, education, and a healthy economy. Those are very good reasons.

 

ORIGIN OF THE NAME PANAMA
There are different versions about the origin of the name Panama.
Some say that it was used to call a common tree in this region, which was called Panama. Others point to the fact that the town was founded on the month of August, when butterflies are in great numbers and that Panama means, in the native language "abundances of butterflies".

The most common of these versions is the one that establishes that a settlement of native fishermen close to the beach where the city was founded was called Panama, to indicate de abundance of fish.

 

 

RELIGION
The majority of Panamanians are catholic. However, due to the great diversity of races in the country, and the freedom of religion, there are numerous churches, temples and synagogues along the country.

LANGUAGE
Although the official language is Spanish, English is spoken and understood in the major cities of Panama.

HEALTH
Viveros Island and Panama are safe places for you to come along with your love ones. Panama counts with moderns equipped hospitals with qualified doctors and specialists

SECURITY
Panama was conferred the highest level (with the USA) of tourist safety by the Pinkerton Intelligence Agency. But, as a precautionary measure, it's not advisable to walk the streets showing money or jewelry.

CLIMATE
The country enjoys an average temperature of 80º F, which is lower in the evening. The average humidity is 70%. The rainy season lasts from May to December. During the dry season, the breezes keep the airflow continuously fresh. In the mountains, the average temperature is between 50º and 60º Fahrenheit.

CURRENCY
Since 1904, the US Dollar is the currency of legal tender in our country. The Balboa, the Panamanian currency, is on parity with the US Dollar. The prices may be presented in Balboas (B/.) or in Dollars ($). Traveler checks and credit cards are widely accepted. The Hotel Tax is 10%. The 5% Value Added Tax is applied to products and services, with the exception of food and medicine.

IMMIGRATION
U.S. citizens and Canadian citizens only need a valid passport and a tourist card to visit Panama. These cards cost around 5 dollars and they are available upon reaching Panama by the way of the immigration officials and the majority of the airlines. A tourist card allows you an automatic period of 30 days that can be extended to 60 days. Travelers from other countries must consult with the Panamanian Embassy or Consulate in their countries in order to obtain the latest information about the entry requirements for Panama.
