La Peregrina

One of the most famous pearls in the world, the 200-gram, pear-shaped pearl known as "La Peregrina" or "The Incomparable," hangs from a lavish necklace owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Although the pearl's origins are contested, most likely was discovered in the beginning of the sixteenth century near Panama. When it was found, it was considered so magnificent that the black slave who discovered it was rewarded with his liberty and his owner was given a grant of land and a title. Balboa, the Spanish conquistador, subsequently acquired it and presented the luminous treasure to King Ferdinand V of Spain.

In 1554, Prince Phillip II of Spain then gave the gem to Mary Tudor, daughter of England's Henry VIII, as a wedding gift. During the next two centuries, La Peregrina passed through a succession of royal hands, and ultimately was sold at the end of the nineteenth century to The Marquis of Abercom.

In 1969, it was sold at auction to Richard Burton who purchased it as a gift for his wife, Elizabeth Taylor. A few years ago, the actress lost the pearl. After a frantic search, the precious gem was finally found in the mouth of her pet dog .

The natural pearls can only be found one out of ten thousand molluscs and are rarer than any other pearl but in Viveros Island you can find them by swimming in the front of you house.

Come and discover where the perfect pearl is hidden!
